Music Review: Generation K cover album

Updated: Nov 27, 2020

Generation K project is a collaboration based in Israel and debuted their album by rendering covers of their favorite songs. They released their album on November 19, 2020, and it is available on SoundCloud, iTunes, and Spotify. The album included six songs which are a mix of genre and moods, ranging from soul-jazz to modern pop.

The first song featured was “Sunny” originally sung by Bobby Hebb which had a soul-jazz genre. For Generation K they transformed it into a disco version, being upbeat and groovy it is enough to have somebody tapping their feet to the beat without noticing it. The vocalist’s bright vocals have undeniably made the whole rendition perfect.

They did an elegant jazz interpretation of the classic “Tea for Two” by Doris Day, giving a calm and sultry atmosphere to the song. Their soft classic version of “Mad World” (by Tears for Fears) gave the most remarkable touch in the whole album. One could feel the added emphasis of emotions in each phrase particularly being accompanied by their transcendent piano arrangement evoking the meaning of the song.

The band also covered Billie Eilish’s alternative indie “I love you”, almost recreating the same original style of the song. They gave an ethereal mood with their cover on “Unintended” by Muse, in which the vocalist did a flawless rendition especially on hitting the falsetto notes.

The last song featured in their song cover album was “Happy Together” by Turtles. This one though may not have been the ideal choice of song for the vocalist’s voice range, particularly when hitting the low notes. But the overall arrangement of the song was funky and brilliantly well-produced.

Generation K has a huge potential in music production noting in the way they have arranged their song cover which is all impressively done, not even mentioning their wide range capacity of genre. Their song cover debut album is worth a listen as it is wholly a unique venture.
